My grandson, Andrew, saved 15 duck eggs. The owner of the lake was going to smash them because he didn't want more ducks. Andrew decided we would take them. 7 eggs never developed. (Boy never drop a rotten duck egg in your bedroom!) 8 eggs hatched, one duck died, but we have 7 ducks. The one that died was pipping out of the wrong end of the shell. He wasn't strong enough to make it. My grandson took 3 and I am raising the rest. Your site was my bible in hatching ducks. Everything I wanted to know I found there. Thank you so much for your help! Becky

We have just hatched out eight mallard ducklings, and a ninth one just hatched a while ago. This duckling has me worried. It pipped at the wrong end of the egg. I helped loosen the shell around it so it could hatch easier. It had been pipped for two days with no progress. When the duckling hatched, it had a deformed foot and it doesn't straiten out like the others did. It is still in the position it hatched in. Does anybody know what is wrong with this little guy?

I just found an abandoned duckling out by the pond. I sat by the fence for a wile wondering what to do i saw it moves its head and figured it must have snapped his neck trying to get away from a snake. I went and got her/him to keep it from further getting hurt. I sat hear for about 30 minutes and decided to do research so i found a little box and put it in there with a small thing of water and lettuce. As I was reading through your sight s/he perked up and started chirping and she looked at me and went to sleep. S/he is so cute. I'm pretty sure it has spraddle leg. Something is still wrong with her neck. S/he kinda holds is tilted like its to heavy to lift. What is all that about? What should I do?

My story is unusual. I rescued a small duckling from under an Explorer vehicle on my way home. I don't know if he will survive, but your website was insightful. My story is odd because nothing about where I live would explain how this little duckling ended up where he did.(or maybe she) I suspect it is a mallard duckling. I got a shoe box, shredded some paper and tried to feed it, but it would only drink water from my finger tips. Another site suggested finely chopped fruits and vegetables, so I finely chopped apples and celery in hopes of feeding this baby tomorrow morning before work, at 8:30am. I just couldn't abandon this baby to the night, with the neighboring cats. I don't have all the heating lamp equipment etc, but I am using the fluorescent lamp under my kitchen countertop to see if I can save this duckling. Any ideas who I can turn to to help this duckling to maturity? Thank you for any assistance. I believe angels come to us in many ways to help others, even when it doesn't seem obvious.

my pekin are 8months old, and I am busting for them to set on their eggs, your website was great, finally someone who speaks in everyday english, loved the pics of the babys, now I know to leave them alone after hatching, I probably would have panicked and tried mouth to mouth, not knowing they needed to sleep, Good Lord!!!!!

Hi, your webpage has been so useful to me and let me tell you why: At the beginning of the month my sister got three duck eggs and two chicken eggs for her chicken to sit on. I decided to keep one duck egg as a project for the children but after much Googling decided it was too complicated without a propper incubator. When I went to give the egg to my sister's chicken I was told to take all the duck eggs because the hen wasn't sitting. I was inspecting the two other eggs to make sure they were actually duck eggs when my arm was knocked and I dropped them. I went home with just my duck egg, determined to hatch it. I live in the tropics so with just a light and a plant pot (sitting over wet cotton) I hatched my beautiful duck (Ducky). I was so successfull I was given the two remaining chicken eggs as the hen was now sitting but more eggs had been found for her and the family was worried the earlier chicken eggs would hatch too soon, causing the hen to leave the others (I candled them and they seemed ready to hatch). I also thought the chicks would give Ducky some company. One of the eggs seemed more close to hatching and sure enough after a few days it pipped and my children and I watched it hatch but what a surprise! It was a duck!!! Of course we had to call it Lucky after its strange incubation - first rejection by the hen for about a week and then being incubated by me but not being treated with the correct humidity for a duck egg (the egg was the same size as the chicken egg!). Lucky was born with a broken toe though and a bald spot that won't go away, even after a week. Is this bald spot normal? In ever other sense she/he seems fine, although Lucky will only eat chick feed and not even look at the crushed snail her brother is devouring. Why would this be? Is it just the age difference? I tried taping the broken toe but Ducky kept pulling at it and I was worried the entire leg would be damaged - better a bent toe than a bent leg. Is a broken toe something that can be fixed later on? And don't suggest separating them because they NEED eachother. I am still waiting on the third egg which I am very sure is a chicken. Take care and thanks for all the advice your sight has given me.

hello I rescued one of the eleven ducklings,in a storm sewer, and just before a serious storm opened up. Myself and friend went to get MOM and the other ten "10" fom being hit on a high speed train track, just in time aswell. Then we though we would gather all them up and the mother and relocate them to a near by park.Well mom took off,the rain storm began...........now I have "11" ducklings...........we placed them in a open lid box & mom just never came back. Now I will try to find MOM,or call the Philadelphia Zoo.to see if they want them or I will try to raise them. oh;;when will they be able to fly out on their own ? or tell me what to do...........please.

My son Caleb & I really enjoyed your site. We've purchased an old home with an acre in Utah and are looking forward to lots of organic gardening. We also are hoping to raise ducks and chickens. We've read that duck eggs are very tasty. Do you eat the eggs?

I am so glad I found your website. A friend found 4 mallard duck eggs that were abandoned in her yard about to hatch that we'll be raising once they pop out and your site was very helpful getting me started with what I need to gather to care for them. Thanks for sharing the info. I'll email pics when they hatch...
